In a context of destruction and dispossession of Syria’s cultural heritage due to both ISIS’ and the regime’s looting activities and military operations, such images, mostly taken in a moment of urgency with mobile phones, become records of what might be destroyed or looted: indexes of what might no longer be there. In Arabic, lion is al assad and bull is al thawr. In mosaicspeak, such maneuver produces an error. Upon a visit to the site where the mosaic initially lay, the image sender—some contemporary version of a monument man—noticed that the mosaic had vanished. He notifies the receiver on the other end of the phone by sending an image of the mosaic taken on a previous visit, with the poignant remark: I am sorry!!!!! A form of body inscription that epitomizes the materialization of the index, a tattoo is meant to be shown and performed as a sign. Tattoos are marks of belonging and projections of the self into the future. Light but bulky, such blankets are a common household item that travel with refugees and immigrants despite the journey, offering warmth and a sense of familiarity. In springtime, the blankets are hung outside in the sun to air and disinfect. The olive trees in the orchard of Salman al-Nabahin in the Bureij refugee camp in Gaza were not taking root properly. He and his son Ahmad wanted to identify the cause. In 2022, they dug up the ground and uncovered a Byzantine-era mosaic dated between the 5th and 8th centuries. The large mosaic features a grid illustrated with wild and domestic animals. Located near the Israeli border, the site is currently inaccessible in the no-man’s land established by the Israeli army in March 2025. Olive in the sun features part of the original mosaic with the shadow of the olive tree now inscribed in it. Where pine trees have been used as a colonial strategy to de-historicize the land by burying hundreds of Palestinian villages underneath, the olive tree here points to and coalesces with the history of the land.
